Hair Loss After Gastric Sleeve — Causes, Prevention & Treatment
Hair loss after bariatric surgery is one of the most common cosmetic concerns patients experience. While it can be distressing, understanding why it happens and how to manage it provides reassurance that it is temporary and manageable.
Why does hair fall out after surgery?
The hair loss experienced after bariatric surgery is called telogen effluvium. It is not caused by the surgery itself, but by the rapid weight loss and metabolic stress that follows. Here is what happens:
- Hair follicles have a growth cycle with active (anagen) and resting (telogen) phases
- Physical stress — rapid weight loss, caloric deficit, hormonal changes — shifts more follicles into the resting phase simultaneously
- About 2-4 months after the stressor, these resting hairs fall out together, causing noticeable thinning
- This is a temporary process; new hair growth resumes as follicles cycle back to the active phase
When does it start and how long does it last?
- Onset: Typically begins 2-4 months after surgery
- Peak: Usually around months 3-6
- Resolution: Most patients see significant regrowth by months 9-12
- Duration: The entire process typically lasts 6-12 months
How to minimize hair loss
While telogen effluvium cannot be completely prevented, you can reduce its severity:
- Protein intake: Prioritize meeting your daily protein goals (60-80g/day). Protein is essential for hair growth.
- Vitamins and minerals: Take all prescribed supplements consistently. Key nutrients for hair health include biotin, zinc, iron, and vitamins B12 and D.
- Hydration: Adequate water intake supports overall cellular health, including hair follicles.
- Gentle hair care: Avoid harsh chemicals, excessive heat styling, and tight hairstyles during the shedding period.
- Lab monitoring: Regular blood work ensures nutritional deficiencies are caught and corrected early.
When to seek additional help
Consult your doctor if:
- Hair loss continues beyond 12 months
- You notice bald patches (which may indicate a different condition)
- Hair loss is accompanied by other symptoms like extreme fatigue or brittle nails
These may indicate nutritional deficiencies requiring adjustment of your supplementation plan.
Remember: hair loss after bariatric surgery is temporary and a sign that your body is going through significant change. The hair grows back.
